Oral Sedation Dentistry

We have offered Oral Sedation to our patients for several years now and the experience has received rave reviews. It has proven to work incredibly well to relax patients during dental work and minimizes pain or sensitivity in the days immediately after dental treatment.

 What is oral sedation dentistry?

Sometimes referred to as “comfortable” or “relaxation” dentistry, the terms describe the feelings most patients experience during their oral sedation appointments. The purpose of oral sedation is to allow us to work more effectively by helping you become as comfortable as possible through the use of sedative medications administered orally.

Dr. Evans, Dr. Nordin-Evans and Dr. Carney are highly trained and certified dentists and they can use a variety of protocols customized to your physiological and pharmacological needs. A number of oral medications have been developed especially for these purposes. They have been subjected to rigorous research and testing, and have been proven to be very safe and effective over decades of use.

During the entire time you are sedated you are in our dental treatment room, being monitored via a hospital grade pulse oximeter unit. This unit is used to monitor and record your vital signs.

The term “sleep dentistry” is inappropriate. Patients are never meant to sleep through appointments and should always be able to verbally and physically respond to cues from the doctor or team.

Which patients benefit the most from sedation?

Oral sedation dentistry can benefit a wide range of patients, including people with:

  •
  • High dental anxiety and fear
  • A severe gag reflex
  • Time constraints—those who need to get more dental treatment done in fewer visits
  • Chronic or acute jaw soreness
  • Physical limitations such as back and neck problems
  • Difficulty getting numb
  • Extensive treatment needs
  • A desire to have dentistry done comfortably while fully relaxed.
  •

If you are completing mercury removal or other dental revision, we often administer IV Vitamin C during the sedation appointment.

We will discuss Sedation Dentistry at your initial visit. If you would like more information on this wonderful way to experience dentistry please give us a call or ask anyone of our knowledgeable team members.
