Saliva Testing

Mercury saliva testing can be done to demonstrate and quantify the mercury vapor that is released from a patient’s mercury amalgam fillings upon stimulation. Test kits are available through our office.

How does it work?

This is a very simple test. A sample of saliva is collected first thing in the morning to use as a baseline. The patient is then instructed to stimulate the mercury fillings by chewing a piece of gum. Following adequate stimulation, a second sample of saliva is obtained. Both samples are then sent to the laboratory for analysis and a printed report is returned to the requesting dentist. Typically there is a very dramatic difference in the amount of mercury in the two saliva samples.

This test is not required at Groton Wellness Dental Spa, but is routinely done by those patients who would like to verify and quantify the amount of mercury that is released from their dental fillings.
