Bioidentical Hormones

What are bioidentical hormones?
Bioidentical (natural) hormones are derived from natural plant sources and are exactly identical to the hormones that the body produces for itself. If hormones need to be boosted up to improve a person’s overall health and wellbeing, it is safer and healthier to use hormones that the body recognizes as its own, rather than hormones from horses, imbalanced versions, or overly potent synthetic versions, like the hormones in most pharmaceutical preparations.

What do bioidentical hormones treat?
Bioidentical hormone balance may be helpful in treating hot flashes, vaginal dryness, symptoms of menopause in women or andropause (age-related decrease in testosterone) in men, erectile dysfunction, low libido, fatigue, insomnia, migraines, PMS, infertility, irritability, and skin problems, among others.

What hormones are used?
The bioidentical hormones most commonly used are estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and thyroid hormone. Doses are maintained as low as possible, with the goal being to find and reestablish the body’s natural hormonal balance, not overload it with a particular supplemental hormone.

How do I get them?
With the exception of low potency progesterone creams, bioidentical hormone therapy is generally obtained through a physician’s prescription, and filled through a compounding pharmacy. A caring and competent pharmacist works closely with the prescribing physician to create just the right combination and dosage for an individual patient.

Are the hormones covered by insurance?
The prescribed bioidentical hormones may or may not be covered by a specific insurance plan. Some insurance companies will reimburse a percentage of the cost. A Flexible Spending Account or Health Savings Account Pharmacy can be used for hormonal consultations or prescriptions. If necessary, common out-of-pocket pharmacy fees for bioidentical hormone prescriptions range from $20-$60 per month.

Where is Groton Wellness located?
Groton Wellness is located in the greater Boston, Massachusetts area. We are about 12 minutes west of the 495 belt; about 45 minutes from downtown Boston.

It’s about all of you.
At Groton Wellness, we take a whole-person approach to hormone balance. We consider all of you, and we look for the root causes of any hormonal problem. Many hormone deficiencies or imbalances can be corrected through other lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet or reduction in stress. In addition, the body cannot metabolize hormones (even bioidentical/natural ones) correctly, if the liver detoxification function is impaired, the adrenal glands are fatigued, or the diet is nutritionally deficient. Our clinical assessment and laboratory testing are comprehensive, our recommendations are individualized, and our follow-up is thorough in order to guide you to better overall health, not just hormone balance.
