About Cathy:
For me, the study, practice and teaching of pilates continues to be transformative. Pilates not only challenges me physically and intellectually, it liberates me creatively. Having “pilates in my body” makes me more effective in teaching clients how to move through the exercises with grace and control. In terms of achieving optimum benefit, I enjoy the freedom to tailor the workouts to address specific needs and goals. I meet the client where she/he is “fitness-wise.”

With regard to overall wellness, pilates has made me more mindful nutritionally, has balanced my posture as well as increased my core strength and improved functional movement in my daily life. It supports my fitness and recreational pursuits of running, cycling and kayaking. Despite all these personal benefits, nothing is more gratifying to me as an instructor than hearing my clients report how much better pilates training makes them look and feel.

My Areas of Interest Include:
Pilates training to counter the effect that modern work life has on the spine – namely the postural imbalances created from sitting for extended periods of time at a computer monitor or in a vehicle; supporting post-injury rehabilitation; improving the quality of life for pre-, post-, and mid-life baby boomers; helping pregnant and new mothers to maintain/recover pelvic floor strength; tailoring pilates to sport-specific pursuits like golf, swimming, tennis, cycling; and understanding/exploring how the stretch with strength and control of pilates (as a complement to bodywork disciplines) can assist in myofascial release.

In addition to studying and teaching pilates, I parent-volunteer at my son’s school, support the athletic community as a nationally-certified swim official, and serve my church community as a middle/high school sex educator. Other interests include the challenge of establishing a sustainable household at my family’s home on the Piscataqua River.

Ask Cathy …

Why did you become a pilates instructor?

I tried pilates to help heal a lower back problem. Impressed with the results I pursued my certification.

What is your favorite part of the job?

The affirmation that comes from clients reporting how much better they feel after a pilates class or a private session.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Be brave.

What fascinates you most about the human body?

The spine and how it’s flexibility (or lack thereof) is a more accurate indicator of true age than years. To quote Joseph Pilates book, Return to Life Through Contrology: “If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old; if it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.”

What are your hobbies?

I am interested in pre-industrial revolution household tools and have a collection of antique butter molds and butter prints. I also enjoy hunting for treasures in secondhand furniture stores.

What do you do to escape the office?

I spend time with my family at our home in Maine on the Piscataqua River.

What is your favorite book?

My favorite novel is, The World According to Garp, and my favorite non-fiction book is, The Four Agreements.

How do you start each day?

I start each day with a cup of strong black coffee and a plan which always includes scheduling some time to “move,” either cardio or pilates or both.

Can I talk with Cathy before attending a class?

Yes, absolutely. I welcome conversation with and questions from anyone who wants to learn about pilates and understand what it can do for them.
