Doctor of Osteopathy
Dr. Elisa Mercuro is a Certified Functional Medicine Physician. Her mission is to reverse and prevent chronic diseases and help her patients experience optimal vitality and health. Functional medicine is a systems approach to your biology. Dr. Mercuro will work with you to find the root causes of your medical problems. She uses personalized treatment plans that involve dietary changes, lifestyle interventions, and supplements or medications to target the imbalances that precede, trigger or perpetuate disease. Elisa’s main goal is to educate her patients so they are able to find and maintain their own best health. True to her osteopathic roots, she feels the body has an amazing ability to heal itself and her recommendations and efforts seek to restore optimal function.
Dr. Mercuro works as a functional medicine consultant in addition to your healthcare team. She treats many medical problems using a functional medicine and integrative medicine approach but, asks that you maintain a primary care physician for emergencies, routine care, and standard screening. She does not function as your primary care physician.
Dr. Mercuro is Board Certified in Family Medicine. She received her residency training in family medicine at NH Dartmouth. She worked in primary care for 13 years in Derry, NH. Elisa was inspired to study functional medicine after realizing that she was managing declining health in her patients instead of promoting health. She received her certification from the Institute of Functional Medicine in 2016.
Elisa’s Personal Story
I think if I am being completely honest, I entered medical school because of obesity, which is a chronic medical condition. I was obese my entire childhood and overweight for most of my adulthood. I certainly did not put this on my medical school entrance essay but I think all along I have been seeking answers to my own health problem. Interestingly, the answers did not come in medical school. I was not self-aware enough at the time to realize I was looking for solutions for my own health until I was sitting in my first functional medicine lecture. I became so emotional right in the middle of the conference as the information was presented to me in such a way, that I felt all of my life experiences had led me to that moment. I was finally able to improve my own health through functional medicine. This compelled me to learn and share this approach with my patients. Having practiced for many years in conventional medicine, I recognized the limitations in the prevention and treatment of chronic medical conditions. Functional medicine gave me a whole new set of tools to change the course of my own health and the health of my patients. In fact, if I am asking my patient to alter their diet or implement some intervention or lifestyle change, odds are I have tried it too.
