Denture Problems

Many first-time denture wearers breathe a sigh of relief because they feel as though all of their dental problems are finally over. As it is with most things in life, one set of challenges is replaced with another. Even the best dentures can’t compare with natural teeth and their ability to chew. It is important to visit your dentist to adjust or “re-fit” your dentures on a regular basis.

Loose Fit

Dentures are made to fit precisely, resting on a ridge of bone and gum tissue. As the mouth naturally changes with age, bone and gum ridges can recede and cause the dentures to fit more loosely. Often times, a denture can be “relined” or adjusted to fit to the minor changes in the ridges. But if the denture is too worn or the ridges change significantly, it may be necessary to create a new denture or partial.

Broken/Chipped Dentures

Do notattempt to make minor repairs on your dentures. Improper “quick fixes” can lead to irritation, malocclusion and/or improper fit. Fractures and chips can be easily and expertly repaired by any one of our dentists, and more involved repair can usually be handled quickly by our denture laboratory.

Sore Spots

A sore spot usually means that the denture (or partial) is in need of an adjustment or relining. As your bone and gum ridges change with age, your dentures may gradually fit improperly, and this can create soreness in some areas.

Discoloration

Like natural teeth, dentures must be brushed daily (with a brush designed to clean dentures) to remove plaque build-up and other deposits. Mild soap and water can be used to clean the dentures, but harsh chemical abrasives should NEVER be used. If the dentures remain stained and/or have stubborn build-up, we can professionally clean them in our office.
