Non-Surgical

The conventional treatment of gum disease (gingivitis and periodontitis) – often leading to surgery for patients – has been changing rapidly in recent years.; With early detection and with early treatment, surgery can be avoided in almost all cases.

Our gum treatment can slow or stop the progression of this common disease. We have different levels of treatments that are individually tailored to the different stages of gum disease – from early gingivitis to advanced periodontitis.

One or more of the following procedures may be used to treat patients:

  • Prophylaxis (Cleaning)
  • Rinses/Oral Medications
  • Scaling and Root Planing
  • Referral to a Periodontist (in very severe cases)

Rinses or Oral Medications

We routinely recommend herbal mouth rinses and depending upon the severity of the gum disease. Upon cleaning and check-up, we may also prescribe additional home care therapies.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and Root Planing is a non-surgical “deep cleaning” treatment that has tremendous benefits in the early stages of gum disease. Special instruments remove bacteria and infection from around the teeth below the gum line.

  1. The tooth is first “scaled”, which is a thorough removal of plaque and tarter accumulation.
  2. Then the root surface is “planed” or smoothed. This eliminates rough areas on the root that can easily trap plaque andbacteria. Gum tissue can more firmly attach to roots that are clean and smooth, thereby preventing tooth loss, harmful bacteria accumulation and sensitivity.

Periodontist Referral

Sometimes a patient’s gum disease is at a stage where it requires immediate attention. The dentists and hygienists at Groton Wellnessare happy to offer complimentary support therapies to patients who will undergo gum surgery. These therapies can help increase healing and shorten recovery time, and encourage continuing gum health. You may schedule an appointment with one of our dentists to create a health and healing regimen tailored to your needs.
