Hormone Testing

At Groton Wellness we utilize different diagnostic laboratory methods to evaluate your hormonal levels — blood, saliva, and urine. Each test has its own set of advantages.

Saliva Testing

Saliva tests are used to detect the levels of sex-hormones produced by the body. This testing is helpful in assessing cyclical production of estrogen and progesterone throughout the month. Also, salivary hormonal levels can be helpful in the initial stages of treatment to determine the need for hormone therapy.

Saliva is beneficial for accurate measurement of cortisol according to the circadian rhythm, which fluctuates throughout the day. Measuring cortisol levels provides a precise assessment of your adrenal health.

Blood Testing

Blood (serum) testing provides a direct assessment of circulating hormones.Serum testing is the best method to monitor the hormonal levels when a patient is being treated with bioidentical hormones.

Some hormones circulating in the bloodstream, such as the thyroid hormones and insulin, do not enter the saliva because of their large size and need to be tested through serum.

Urine Testing

A urine test allows the measurement of many estrogen metabolites. These metabolites provide important information about a person’s relative risk for estrogen-related cancer. A current concept in hormone-related cancer prevention is the measurement of the ratio of two estrogen metabolites: 2-hydroxyestrone and 16-hydroxyestrone. Also, urinary estrogens can be a good monitor of your liver detoxification ability. Elevated urinary estrogens in women may indicate a history of exposure to toxic chemicals that stress their liver.

These hormone tests help to obtain a clear picture of a patient’s hormonal levels, and allows our practitioner to create a personalized wellness program that addresses a patient’s individual needs.
